Have you ever slept in a hammock? Science has verified that experiencing deep sleep on a consistent basis is essential for maintaining one''s optimal health. Millions today find it difficult to sleep deeply. If you wake up in the morning without feeling revitalized, your health is not what it should be. While the demand for sleeping aids increases, most people still do not know that hammocks can be used as a tool for facilitating deep sleep.

Now on to fabric. These hammocks were made popular by the in the early days and were generally made of canvas. The earliest versions were woven where they are still manufactured {by hand, largely} today. The fabric has a virtually closed weave, so it is pretty strong and resilient to accidental or abusive damage. The larger cotton hammocks can be quite comfortable providing the material has a bit of give or flex. Unlike rope, there is no waffling effect, but because of its closed weave there is less ventilation. Be prepared to get a bit sweaty in a fabric if you lie in direct sunlight on a hot day. Overall, these hammocks tend to be lighter than rope, but they usually weigh anywhere from 5 - 20lbs. All cotton fabric can double in weight if they get wet{not a great feature if your planning a backpacking trip!}. There are now some excellent synthetic fabric that do not absorb moisture and wick it away. They are also extremely weather resistant and durable against rough housing children. As for the rope, it is a good idea to buy a fabric or quilted-style hammock that has been weatherized to ensure their longevity. A well made fabric can be a very low maintenance hammock that can be left out year round, and thus appealing to those of us who have a tendency to not take very good care of our "things".

What is the difference between the Cotton and Polyester rope? Cotton rope is a natural fiber and as such is typically softer than the polyester rope. Its color is more natural looking than polyester. Polyester rope is a synthetic fiber and as such stands up better than cotton rope when the hammock is left out in the rain and moisture for extended periods of time. The polyester rope is also a bright white color as opposed to the natural white color of the cotton rope. The cotton rope is the original rope used to make the rope. It seems to be more comfortable, but needs more attention than the polyester. If you see that you are going to have several days of rain, you will need to bring your cotton hammock inside. You do not want this type of rope to get wet and stay wet for a long period of time. The polyester rope is more weather resistant due to the fact that it does not absorb as much moisture as the cotton rope. This type of rope can be left out through the summer months. The only disadvantage to the polyester is that it tends to stretch and stiffen slightly. We highly recommend that both of these materials be brought in and stored in a dry place for the winter.
