Hammock for my bed? Most people sleep on beds that actually create tension in the body. The fact is when you lie on any surface (such as a bed), all of your body weight must be collected somewhere. These places that support all your weight are called "pressure points", and they are the reason you must change your body''s positions throughout the night. Obviously the constant need to change positions detracts from a deep sleep experience. But what if you didn''t have to rotate in the middle of the night? Perhaps the most comfortable bed is not a bed at all, but a hammock. In fact, over 10 million people worldwide use a hammock as their bed.

we will begin with Rope-Style Hammocks. Most rope usually are equipped with wood staves in order to spread out the heavier rope material used to weave the hammock. These hammocks are generally made of either cotton or a polypropylene mix. The biggest single appeal to these hammocks seems to be the classic look it provides. This hammock is regularly featured in advertisements depicting the "good life" and definitely catches your eye when you see one hung up because of its open breadth. Unless you have the idealic tree scenario, then most likely a large metal stand around 12ft-16ft long or a wooden equivalent will be required to enjoy these hammocks. While aesthetically this hammock style is preferable to some, the level of comfort they offer may not be. Because the interstices in the rope are quite large and the material heavy, you will, if you lie in the hammock in a bathing suit, shorts, or T-shirt, take on the imprint of the hammock and endup looking and feeling like a waffle unless you lay a mat or thick blanket under you. Adding these would eliminate most, if not all, of the ventilation and promote sweating on a warm summer day.

Now on to fabric. These hammocks were made popular by the in the early days and were generally made of canvas. The earliest versions were woven where they are still manufactured {by hand, largely} today. The fabric has a virtually closed weave, so it is pretty strong and resilient to accidental or abusive damage. The larger cotton hammocks can be quite comfortable providing the material has a bit of give or flex. Unlike rope, there is no waffling effect, but because of its closed weave there is less ventilation. Be prepared to get a bit sweaty in a fabric if you lie in direct sunlight on a hot day. Overall, these hammocks tend to be lighter than rope, but they usually weigh anywhere from 5 - 20lbs. All cotton fabric can double in weight if they get wet{not a great feature if your planning a backpacking trip!}. There are now some excellent synthetic fabric that do not absorb moisture and wick it away. They are also extremely weather resistant and durable against rough housing children. As for the rope, it is a good idea to buy a fabric or quilted-style hammock that has been weatherized to ensure their longevity. A well made fabric can be a very low maintenance hammock that can be left out year round, and thus appealing to those of us who have a tendency to not take very good care of our "things".
